How to use this calculator

Calculate hours worked

From 09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtract a 30-minute break to get 8 hours, or 8.0 decimal hours. Enter the break in minutes, not as a decimal fraction of an hour.

Cross midnight explicitly

For a 22:00 start and 06:00 finish, choose “Next day.” That gives 8 hours before breaks. With “Same day,” an end time before the start is rejected instead of silently assuming an overnight shift.

Understand decimal hours

Minutes are fractions of 60. Seven hours 30 minutes is 7.5 decimal hours; seven hours 15 minutes is 7.25. The result shows both a hours-and-minutes reading and decimal hours for easier comparison.

Keep clock time separate from real elapsed time

This tool uses clock times and the selected day offset. It does not adjust for travel across time zones or daylight-saving transitions. For a shift affected by a clock change, confirm the actual timestamps and applicable payroll rules separately.

Common questions

What does the same start and end time mean?

On the same day it means zero elapsed time. If you select “Next day,” it means 24 hours before breaks.

Can a break exceed the duration?

No. A break longer than the elapsed interval is rejected. A break equal to the duration leaves zero net time.
